My Story
As early as I can remember, trying
to prove myself and standing out from the crowd were my strongest drivers
towards that yet to be determined dream.
I was a middle child! And though that may have initially proved troublesome in
my mind, I’m grateful I used that as an excuse to become this outspoken, and
often too opinionated, woman I am today.
Though my parents may not have been
your typical extremely traditional “conservative” middle-eastern pair, more
often than not, it’s safe to say that my upbringing endured constant scrutiny
of menial matters as silly as what I wear and how I speak, to material
questions of why I comfortably choose to mingle with men or my freedom to
travel abroad on my own.
None of that mattered to me. I knew
I was destined for greatness and I wasn’t going to rest until I achieved it!
Having academically genius parents,
it was inevitable that I would do well in school (whether I liked it or not!). That
luckily worked out brilliantly for me as my top grades got me a fully paid
scholarship of any career of my choice.
I chose law, naturally, as it was
the perfect setting stone for the strong willed character I was becoming.
Living abroad opened my eyes to new
perspectives that were beyond my comprehension. It taught me independence,
responsibility, accountability for my actions and a true appreciation of my own
worth and capabilities.
I moved back, started working for a
leading government organization – and that’s where my journey to endless dreams
and opportunities began.
I was the youngest female among a
brutally male dominant environment. Often my opinion would be disregarded; I
may have been subtly ridiculed and sometimes referred to as the “child” in
meetings. Yet amidst the adversity, I stood my grounds and held my own. If I
had an opinion – I would make you listen! Not too long after, I had become
their equal and friend.
I spent almost 4 years at that job.
I developed, matured and learned more than I had hoped for. But that just
wasn’t enough. I needed more.
My rebellious professional behavior
had made my reputation precede me in the market. When a new comer corporation
was entering the market – they were quick to call me. At my first interview, I
was told that the purpose of the organization was “to make a difference for the
people in Qatar”. I was sold. I instantly accepted and entered a diverse world
of endless surprises.
Throughout its first start up year,
I led a one (wo)man legal department in the company and had close to 500
agreements under my belt. When I told people I was only 24 years old then, that
number seemed a lot more impressive!
Other than securing multimillion
dollar deals, I started branching out into our corporate social responsibility
division that leads our charitable initiatives. I became actively engaged in
setting up various projects including participating and advising on publishing
a book comprising pieces written by various women. The book will be sold on
international women’s day and proceeds of which will go to charitable needs. I
am also currently a member of the Social Investment Committee that is focused
on developing projects that raise awareness, are charitable and/or benefit the
community.
As a lover of the arts, I am also
working on a few paintings and sketches in hopes of having a gallery showcase
one of my greatest passions.
I play the piano and am also
learning to play the guitar and as part of my music school’s campaign, will
soon be playing and singing at homes for the elderly and for children with
disability to somehow make a slight difference by bringing the beauty of music
into their lives.
Though for long it seemed I was out
there fighting for a cause all on my own, 2010 seems to be my year to shine!
Two local magazines have approached me to be part of articles entitled
“Ambitious Women in Business” and “The Next Great Women” too look out for in
2010.
Words could not express how overwhelmed and taken aback I was by how humbling
it was to be chosen. It’s the first step of the dream. The opening of the door
to other girls and women to know you’re efforts will not go unnoticed.
Life is too short. And you may not
know exactly where you’re heading, but I strongly believe that, where you can
make a difference, where you can touch someone’s life, make sure you leave your
mark. Ensure your legacy lives on.
Some may judge you. Many others will
not have your back. So long as you can dream, there’s nothing you can’t
achieve.
Every morning I remind myself –
“Dream Big. Aim High. You Don’t Need Wings to Fly”. I may not have changed the
world yet – but I sure won’t rest until I do!

قصتي
في سن مبكرة جداً، كانت محاولتي لإثبات ذاتي والتميز بين الناس أحد أقوى الدوافع بإتجاه الحلم الذي لم يكن قد تحدد بعد. كنت الطفلة الوسطى بين إخواتي! رغم أن هذا كان في البداية أمراً مزعجاً بالنسبة إلي، ولكني ممتنة كوني إستخدمته وسيلة لأتحوّل اليوم إلى إمرأة صريحة، ومتشبثة برأيها في أغلب الأحيان.
رغم أن والدايَ لم يكونا معظم الوقت الزوجين التقليديين و"المتحفظين" بالأسلوب الشرق أوسطي، من الجدير القول بأن فترة نشأتي تطلّبت المراقبة المستمرة لأبسط الأمور، مثل الملابس التي أرتديها وكيفية التحدث، وحتى الأسئلة المتعلّقة بالسبب الذي يجعلني مرتاحة للتحدث مع الرجال أو حرية سفري إلى الخارج بمفردي.
لم يكن يهمني أي شيء من ذلك. كنت أعلم أنه مقدّر لي تحقيق أمور عظيمة ولم أكن لأرتاح حتى أحققها!
كون والداي من العباقرة الأكاديميين، كان لا بد لي أن أحقق أداءً جيداً في المدرسة (سواء رغبت في ذلك أم لا!). ومن حسن الحظ أن النتائج التي حققتها كانت بارعة، حيث أن درجاتي العالية أمّنت لي الحصول على منحة دراسية مدفوعة بالكامل في أي مجال اختاره.
وقد إخترت دراسة القانون، بطبيعة الحال، لاسيما وانه يشكل الحجر الاساسي المثالي للشخصية العازمة التي كنت أتحوّل إليها.
ومن خلال العيش في الخارج، تفتّحت عيناي على آفاق جديدة تتخطى قدرتي على الفهم. تعلّمت معنى الإستقلالية، المسؤولية، المساءلة عن أفعالي والتقدير الحقيقي لقيمتي الشخصية وقدراتي.
بعدها عدت إلى بلادي، وبدأت العمل لدى منظمة حكومية رائدة- من هنا بدأت رحلتي نحو الأحلام والفرص اللامتناهية الآفاق.
كنت الفتاة الأصغر سناً في بيئة يُسيطر عليها الرجال بشراسة. غالباً ما كان يتم تجاهل آرائي؛ تعرّضت في بعض الأحيان للسخرية كما دُعيت "الطفلة" في المجتمعات. ولكن في خضم الشدائد، تمكنت من الصمود وتحقيق ذاتي. إن كان لدي رأي حول أمر ما- أدفع الجميع للإستماع! وبعد فترة قصيرة، أصبحت نداً وصديقة لهم.
أمضيت نحو 4 سنوات في هذا العمل. تطوّرت، نضجت وتعلّمت أموراً تتعدى ما كنت أحلم به. ولكن ذلك لم يكن كافياً. أردت أكثر من ذلك.
سلوكي المهني المتمرد ساهم في جعل سمعتي تسبقني في سوق العمل. عند دخول شركة جديدة إلى السوق- كان مسؤولوها يتصلون بي بسرعة. في مقابلتي المهنية الأولى، قيل لي أن هدف المنظمة كان "إحداث فرق للشعب في قطر". أُخذت بذلك، ووافقت فوراً لأدخل في عالم متنوّع من المفاجآت اللامتناهية.
خلال السنة الأولى، قدت القسم القانوي في الشركة الذي يضم إمرأة واحدة، عملت على نحو 500 إتفاقية وعندما كنت أخبر الناس أني أبلغ 24 عاماً في ذلك الوقت كان يبدو لهم هذا العمر مثير للإهتمام.
إضافة إلى تثبيت الإتفاقيات بملايين الدولارات، بدأت الإهتمام بقسم المسؤولية الإجتماعية في الشركة والذي يقود المبادرات الخيرية. إنغمست في المشاركة الفاعلة في تحديد المشاريع المتنوعة، بما في ذلك المشاركة وتقديم المشورة حول نشر كتاب يضم القطع الأدبية من تأليف عدة نساء. و بيع الكتاب بمناسبة يوم المرأة العالمي، على أن يعود ريع العائدات للأعمال الخيرية. حالياً أيضاً، إني عضو في لجنة الإستثمار الإجتماعي التي تركز على تطوير المشاريع التي من شأنها زيادة الوعي، المشاريع الخيرية المفيدة للمجتمع.
كوني كذلك ملهمة بالفنون، فإنني أعمل على بعض اللوحات والرسومات على أمل أن أحظى بعرض خاص لأحد أعظم هواياتي.
كما وأني عازفة بيانو فإنني بصدد تعلم العزف على الغيتارأيضا و هذا كجزء من الحملة التي اطلقتها مدرسة الموسيقى التي أرتادها، سأبدأ قريباً بالمشاركة في جولات للعزف والغناء في دور المسنين وللأطفال ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة بحيث يمكنني بطريقة ما إحداث فرق من خلال إدخال جمال الموسيقى إلى حياتهم.
رغم أنه، ولفترة طويلة كان يبدو أني أكافح من أجل قضية خاصة بي، إلا أن عام 2010 قد يكون عام التألق بالنسبة إلي! فقد إتصلت بي مجلتان محليتان لأكون جزءاً من المقالات التي تعدها تحت عنوان "النساء الطموحات للعام" و"النساء العظيمات المقبلات" واللواتي نتطلّع بهن للعام 2010. لا تستطيع الكلمات التعبير عن مدى الشعور الغامر والمفاجأة اللذان شعرت بهما لإختياري. إنها الخطوة الأولى لتحقيق الحلم. فتح الباب امام الفتيات والنساء الأخريات، ومعرفة أن جهودك لن تذهب دون ملاحظتها.
الحياة قصيرة جداً. وقد لا تدرك تماماً إلى أين تتجه، ولكني أؤمن بشدة انه حيث يمكن إحداث فرق، حيث يمكن التأثير على حياة شخص ما، يجب التأكد من أنك تتركين علامتك الخاصة. تأكدي من أن تراثك سيستمر. قد يحكم عليك البعض و العديد غيرهم لن يكونوا سنداً لك. ولكن طالما أنك تحلمين، ليس هناك من شيء لا يمكنك تحقيقه.
كل يوم أذكّر نفسي – "أحلمي كثيراً. إطمحي للأعلى. لا تحتاجين إلى أجنحة للطيران". قد لا أكون تمكنت من تبديل العالم- ولكني بالتأكيد لن أرتاح قبل القيام بذلك!
